Lake Wanaka is an absolutely stunning lake located about an hour away from Queenstown on the South Island. The water here is very cold as it comes from melted snow in the mountains nearby. Since the water is so pure however, it is absolutely clear. The second picture shows the incredible visibility; even at about 20 feet deep you can clearly see the bottom. This was especially fun to watch fish swim beneath you while at a half mile from shore. Next to the lake is the town of Wanaka which has excellent outdoor restaurants and cafes. We rented kayaks for the day to spend out on the lake and even visited an island in the middle of the lake, show in the last two pictures.
Wanaka boasts some of the great hikes in New Zealand, such as Roy's Peak and Rocky Mountain Trail. Both of these hikes are well known throughout the area as they offer great scenic views of the nearby mountains and lakes.
