Doubtful Sound is a beautiful waterway in the south island of New Zealand. The name Doubtful Sound is a misnomer as this is actually a fjord, meaning a valley carved by glaciers which connects to the sea.
This incredible day trip can be booked through a local travel agency. There is only one company which has the rights to conduct cruises here so prices are a little higher due to the lack of competition, however the stillness, calm and reflection that is possible through being the only boat in these waters is definitely worth the investment. They also offer overnight trips, which were sold out during the time we were there.
During the trip we saw breathtaking views, learned local stories and encountered some marine life. I even got a blurry picture of the dolphins which came to ride the bow waves of the boat. One of my favorite parts of the tour was a spot where the captain cut off all of the engines and we listed only to the sounds of lapping waves, passing birds and the stillness of nature. If you're planning a trip to New Zealand, this is an adventure you must do.
