I was so excited to get a chance to try Naoki Matcha out for myself. Looking at their website and Instagram profile, it seemed like their product was really top quality. To be honest, I’m not much of a Matcha person and have never had the opportunity to try ceremonial grade Matcha. I didn’t know what to expect going into this tea tasting.
For those of you that don’t know what matcha is, it is a form of powdered green tea from Japan. The leaves are shade grown to boost their chlorophyll content, which gives them a deep green color. The leaves are then ground up using a traditional stone grinder and the powder is collected. This green tea is becoming popular due to its health benefits. More of the tea nutrients can be absorbed when you consume the entire leaf rather than just the water it has been soaking in.
When I opened the package inside the tea tin, I immediately smelled the aroma of fresh, high-quality Matcha. I could tell right away what the Matcha was going to taste like, and the flavor did not disappoint. The color was the deepest shade of emerald green I had ever seen in tea before. Once mixed into the hot water, the tea took on a darker shade but did not lose its vibrant green hue. After sipping the tea, I could feel the deep umami flavor drawing me in.
Although I only have gotten the chance to try this tea once, I know I will keep it in my rotation because it is just so good. The tea tin itself is beautifully crafted and contains a ton of Matcha powder. Considering this, the tea is very fairly priced considering how much you get and how high quality it is.
If you are going to buy a ceremonial grade Matcha, let it be this one. I personally like to keep multiple grades in the house, one for cooking, one for drinking and now, one for special occasions.
Thank you so much Naoki Matcha for making such a wonderful tea!
